Summer has officially arrived in New Zealand - but along with the longer days, blue skies and warmer weather - also comes our highest risk drowning season.
Days Like These is a Water Safety New Zealand campaign drawing attention to the fact that nearly half of drownings in New Zealand occur during summer.
Through Days Like These Water Safety New Zealand asks us to take extra care during summer in and around water. Days Like These reminds New Zealanders that drowning is preventable and there are steps that can be taken to reduce our drowning rate.
Everyday decisions prevent drownings. That includes - always wear a lifejacket – including when fishing from rocks, choose to swim at beaches with a lifeguard patrol – and swim between the red and yellow flags, never dive alone, and leave the water if conditions change, actively supervise children (if they’re close enough to cuddle, you’re at the right distance from them) and of course check the weather conditions, check the risks, know your limits, and leave things for another day if unsure.
