We invest in data science and analysis to understand where, when, and why drownings occur.
Drowning prevention reports provide comprehensive analysis of New Zealand’s drowning challenges. Reports highlight the work undertaken by the water safety community across the country and examine trending risks in specific environments, regions, activities, and demographic groups.
Since 2016 these annual reports focus on preventable drownings only – where intervention, education, and rescue efforts of the water safety community could make a difference. Information on all fatalities in New Zealand’s waterways, road or air accidents, homicide, suicide, or deaths of unknown origin are included in older reports.
The 2024 National Drowning Prevention Report offers an in-depth analysis of trends by age, activity, environment, and region, along with data-driven solutions to address New Zealand's drowning problem.
