November is Water Safety Month

In Water Safety Month, New Zealand celebrates the theme We All Play a Part.

This theme acknowledges the part all of us can play in building a culture of water safety in New Zealand. We’re celebrating those who play a part in keeping New Zealanders safe in and around water, and we would love you to share your story.

Whether it’s sharing your own story, or shining a light on someone else's effort – individual or organisation – please get involved and help us celebrate how we all play a part this Water Safety Month.

There are so many working hard across the motu to keep Kiwis safe – this is the month to really celebrate that work!

Share a story with us, create content, or a social media post – use the hashtag #weallplayapart and tag us in and we’ll make sure your story is amplified.

We’ll be looking out for your stories on our social channels. Or email them directly to us: legends@watersafety.org.nz

Water Safety Month is an opportunity to highlight the great work being done in communities across the motu and by organisations across the water safety community - from Coastguard crews, to surf lifesaving clubs, community groups, teachers, parents and more . . .

Drowning prevention is a complex issue that no single group can solve alone. By recognising the role we each play as individuals, whānau, communities, and organisations, we can build a stronger culture of water safety across Aotearoa.

Let’s celebrate the big and small steps we can take to keep each other safe.

We’ve supplied tools below to help you with your content - plus some examples of how we’ll be using them to inspire you!

Need help? Just let us know.

How to get involved

We would love to hear more about the part you play in keeping New Zealanders safe in, on and around water. We’ll be sharing content throughout the month and would love to highlight your story too!

Share your story via social media as a video or a written story.

If filming – here’s a suggested script:

  • Kia ora! We’re (Organisation Name)! (Or if you’re an individual: “I’m …”) We / I Play a Part by (what you do to play a part in water safety!)

For example, our friends at Te Hiku Sports Hub might say: “Here in Kaitaia we play a part by teaching children water survival skills – we replicate real-life scenarios in a pool environment.” Sarah from Hawke’s Bay might say: “I’m Sarah and I play a part by making sure my husband never goes diving alone.”

  1. Consider – what is the part you play in keeping New Zealanders safe in and around water?
  2. Film your video (phone is fine!) – with yourself, team members (or the whole team) introducing yourself and telling us about the part you play in water safety. Feel free to add your logo or a sign with your name on it!
  3. Remember to keep your video short and sharp – under 30 seconds is ideal.
  4. Remember to tag in @watersafetynz and #weallplayapart – so we can see and reshare the content.

If you prefer to share your story with us by email – we would love to share on your behalf just email legends@watersafety.org.nz for more.
